Jan’s Spicy Turnip Masala (Vegan Recipe)

Turnip or white turnip also known as “Shalgam’ is a root vegetable. Turnips are loaded with fiber and vitamins, perfect for low carb or keto diet. This was my first try with turnips, and the recipe turned out delicious and definitely share-worthy!

What you need-
3 turnips (peeled and cut in cubes)
1 finely diced onion
1 finely diced tomato
1/2 tsp ginger paste
1/2 tsp garlic paste
1/2 tsp jalapeño paste (optional)

1 tsp oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/4 tsp gluten free asafoetida
1/2 tsp chili powder (to taste)
1 tsp cumin powder (to taste)
1 tsp coriander powder (to taste)
(You can 1 tsp substitute garam masala if you don’t have the cumin and coriander powder)
1/2 tsp salt (to taste)
1/2 tsp sugar (to taste)
1 cup water

Heat oil for 30 secs
Add cumin seeds, once they sputter, add diced onions and jalapeño, ginger-garlic paste, Sauté for 2 mins
Add diced tomatoes, turmeric powder, asafoetida, chili powder, cumin and coriander powder, mix well and sauté for about 2 mins
Add the cut turnips, mix well, add 1 cup water
Cook covered on medium for 8-10 mins until pieces are tender or cooked to your preferred consistency.
Switch off the gas and remove lid after 2 minutes

Garnish with cilantro and lemon juice (optional)
