Traditional foods vs modern foods

Today we are going to explore traditional foods vs modern foods. There has been a massive shift from traditional food to modern food across the globe. Reasons include:

  1. Modern food is quick to prepare and eat
  2. Modern food is inexpensive as compared to traditional food
  3. Modern food might be tastier as compared to traditional food
  4. It might become a habit to eat modern food over traditional food.
  5. Food marketing
Due to this shift in eating from traditional food to modern food, chronic illnesses and obesity have taken over. Earlier people used to get acute illnesses. Modern diets normally have a high quantity of sugar, oil and fat as compared to traditional diets.
Few examples of traditional vs modern foods are:
  1. Schnitzel vs Hamburger- Schnitzel is a popular German dish which is breaded meat cutlet. There are healthy options of schnitzel available which are shallow fried. On the contrary, hamburgers are unhealthy, because the patty is deep fried and has mayonnaise.
  2. Hainanese Chicken Rice vs Fried rice- The same goes for the prevalence of fried rice in Singapore. Fried rice is definitely tastier, but is loaded in calories due to frying of the rice. Hainanese chicken rice is a healthier option with boiled chicken and boiled rice.
  3. Jowar Roti vs Bread – In Indian cuisine, jowar roti is considered a form of bread to eat with vegetables or meat. Jowar is known as Sorghum in English. It is gluten free and improves digestion,while keeping the blood sugar in control. But we see the emergence of flour bread in the last half century in India, especially during breakfast, due to the sheer convenience and the taste of it.
To conclude, traditional foods might be a little more time taking to prepare, but it is an investment in itself. You reap rewards in health by consuming traditional food over modern food.
